A progressive politics and policies forum.
How can we get quality health care for everyone?...What is the argument for public investment in early childhood education?...How do we ensure corporate accountability to protect people's retirement savings?...What is the best way to protect the environment and develop good-paying jobs?...What is going to be done about all the cars clogging our highways?
The DFL Education Foundation asks these questions. Concentrating on issues not only wins elections, it influences government. People challenged by issues discover that political parties are important for changing public policy. Vigorous debate on issues draws new blood into political parties. Look at the progress of the right wing.
The DFL Education Foundation began in 1985 with an endowment from Barney Allen, the Democratic Farmer Labor Party's first candidate for governor in 1944. The DFL Education Foundation's goal is to promote informed participation in politics, through citizen education, leadership development, and public discussion of political issues. We believe that:
1) Everyone should have opportunity and that government and politics play an important role in ensuring that opportunity.
2) The economy should work for the majority of the people of our country.
3) Government has a role in making our society grow together, not apart.
4) We can't afford not to invest in the future.
5) That there is a role for politics and government in improving people's lives
We are currently focusing on five key issues we believe have the greatest impact on the lives of Minnesotans: Living Wage Jobs and Retirement Security, Quality Schools and Lifelong Learning, Affordable and Quality Health Care for All, Accessible Transportation, and Environmental Sustainability. Debate around the best policies to adopt to address these issues will occur in neighborhood discussion groups, regional conferences, and op ed pieces. We will draw on local and national experts to discuss what policies best serve Minnesotans.
